The Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame is opening up a New York Museum.
My iPod headphones snapped recently, so I swung by the Soho Apple Store after work yesterday to pick up a new pair. On my way up Greene St, a line of cars were waiting in traffic, honking over deafening pre-teen shrieks in the distance. Oh no. That could mean one thing — The Jonas Brothers were nearby. Sure enough, Disney Channel’s entire Manhattan audience were resisting barricades, waiting for a glimpse of the puberty-prone trio who were scheduled for an in-store performance at the Apple Store. The brothers arrived in giant black Escalades, which triggered a massive riot of little girls knocking over barricades, declaring mob rule. I lingered around, with the sole intention of documenting the mayhem (lie, OMG, Nick totally looked at me). In the end, I still don’t have headphones. More photos under the cut.
Remember the bridge scene in Cloverfield? This was scarier.

Why is there a 40 year old man in that mob?

Good luck Cops.

Who the hell are The Jaundice Brothers?
Ever dream of owning Slick Rick’s multicolor diamond-set eye patch or Missy Elliot’s diamond turntable ring (which features moving parts)? If so, you’ll need to attend what’s being billed as the first-ever hip-hop jewelry auction taking place on October 1 at Phillips de Pury & Company New York.
Hip Hop’s Crown Jewels showcases bling from nearly 50 of hip-hop’s biggest talents, including offerings from Kanye West and 50 Cent. Other items up for bid include: Biz Markie’s black and white diamond headphones pendant in white gold; MC Lyte’s gold Nefertiti ring and necklace; Sean “P.Diddy” Comb’s princess and baguette cut diamond and platinum bracelet; Pharrell Williams’ Gucci link necklace; Lil’ Jon’s diamond and fancy yellow diamond and gold Crunk Ain’t Dead Pendant and necklace (it was documented by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s largest diamond pendant), Notorious B.I.G.’s Yellow Gold and stainless steel Rolex watch with diamond bezel; and Tupac Shakur diamond and gold “M.O.B.” ring.
The auction is directed by specialist Alia Varsano, worldwide head of contemporary jewelry at Phillips de Pury & Company, in consultation with journalist Minya Oh (Bling Bling: Hip Hop’s Crown Jewels). A portion of the proceeds will benefit Rush Community Affairs, Russell Simmons’ coalition of nonprofit organizations including Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation, the Hip Hop Summit Action Network and the Diamond Empowerment Fund.
North Carolina’s Weedeater has been on the scene for a while, but if you need to know what scene that might be, you’re probably not really paying attention. Where as some sludge/doom acts go the subtler, artsy route (Harvey Milk, Sleep) others simply lay it on the line (Bongzilla). Certainly Weedeater is of the later ilk, and having just signed on to Southern Lord they’ve joined the ranks of such highly esteemed acts as Earth, Sun O))) and Goatsnake. Openers Black Cobra might not be so up-front in band-names (of course they share members with fellow LA rockers Acid King) but they certainly follow suit in glacially paced brutality. Anyway both bands are dropping in on their tour tonight at Philly’s Johnny Brenda’s, tomorrow night at the Middle East in Cambridge and Friday at the Knitting Factory in New York. Check tonight’s show for Philadelphia’s own Intergalactic Incense Burners, who prefer their sessions a little jammier. Think Clutch. It’s more of a nodding thing then a full on banging…which might just spare you the metal-head-neck tomorrow morning. But probably not.
A few months ago, we profiled local pop crooner Madison after hearing her tunes consistently tear up the downtown club circuit for months. Below is a new music video of her Lil Wayne Lollipop cover, shot entirely on Super-8 film for a retro look. An answer to every little boy’s dreams.
Careful if you’re at work — this could look like soft-core porn to a passerby.
